What is maesaengi?

  • seaplant : seaweed of the Green Algae seaweed family,
    Maesaeni is its Korean name.
  • It’s found worldwide. In Korea, it mainly lives in the southern
    coastal areas such as Wando, Gangjin, and Jangheung.

  • It looks like tube without branches and it is about
    15cm long and 0.2 to 0.5cm thick.
  • Similar to young green laver, but maesaengi is
    softer and sweeter.
  • It appears around mid-October, thrives during the winter, and disappears from April. It is mainly
    harvested from late November to late February.

  • It is consumed especially in winter near the
    area where it is harvested. And it’s common to
    cook hot soups with oysters.
